Today's details

So, I know I posted that the doctors found that it was Glaucoma, but I wanted to add a little more detail. Savannah did really well through all the appointments yesterday and today. She was a willing patient and seemed to be completely over the issues that had prompted the hard doctors appointment on Tuesday. Maybe it helped to go to doctors appointments and not get stuck with any needles... at least not while awake.

We arrived this morning at 6:30 at Wolfsons Children's Hospital. By 7:30 she was changed and in a special waiting room where they had given her the loopy drugs. Okay, so that isn't the official name but I don't really know what the official name is. Basically though it makes the kids go into a medicated drunk stage.

Forty minutes later, we are talking with the doctor. He did find Glaucoma and the pressure of her eyes was twice what it should have been. He described the next step as being a surgery where they basically make slits in the eyes that allow the moisture from the iris to drain to the white area of the eye, and then from there is reabsorbed through the bodies natural cycle. He said that they have at most two attempts for that to work, then they have to try other methods to lower the pressure. What those other methods were, I got confused about, but it would require a more specialized specialist, as it would be then beyond the care in which he could provide.

After we were done with the findings, we were then taken immediately to Savannah, who was awake and screaming, I mean SCREAMING her head off. (All the kids were in there screaming though at this time but Savannah was so loud that we heard her over the rest all the way out by the entrance from the lobby. As soon she heard mommy and daddy's voice and felt my arms she calmed immediately. within minutes she went from Screaming to sound asleep. After another 30 minutes of sleep she was able to rouse in a much better state of mind, have some juice, investigate the IV tape, get a sticker for the other had, tear off the blood pressure cuff, and try and help get dressed. (She also wanted to walk but we knew it would only scare her cause she still couldn't stand correctly.) Once she had some juice, and kept it down for a little while, we were able to go home. That made her feel better too.

On the way over to Grandmas she almost ended up getting sick but managed to fight off the nausea.

By the time we got to Grandma and Grandpa's house, she was adamant that she wanted to walk. So I let her try. She stumbled a little like when dizzy, but then just started taking off and running all around. She ate a full meal and took a bath before we headed all the way home.

As Mike and Ella napped, Savannah and I went over and played with Hannah some, and wished Grandma Susan bye (Today was the last day that she would be watching Hannah). Then we both came back and napped some too. Savannah took a longer than average nap, but other than that I would not have known anything had happened just this morning. After Veggie tales, dinner (Thank you, Lorretta!) and bath, we put in her eye drops (supposed to help temporarily relieve some pressure, but not a long term solution) and sent her to bed, where she still currently is. Maybe tonight she will sleep so well that she will stay in her bed all night, or maybe she will end up on the sofa like every other night. I don't know which, but I am okay with either.

Savannah was a very good patient today, all things considering. Next week it will be a repeat of today, except after the actual surgery she will have an eye patch on and have certain restrictions (like no swimming for a few weeks... hopefully that doesn't include bath times!)

So our prayer request now is this:
That the meds will do what they are intended to do (relieve some pressure so no more damage is done immediately);
that the surgeries will work the FIRST time;
that the eye will start to mend itself back together.

The last one is one that only God can do, repair the damage that is already there. He has the power to do it, to that I have no doubt, for he made all of her in the first place from the hair on her head to the tips of her toes. To repair the eye is but a minor thing. Whether it is in His plan for her life, well, that is only known to Him alone. When two or more are gathered together in pray though, God moves.

Here is a tidbit for you though. Ever feel like there are too many problems to deal with? Go visit a children's hospital. No matter what the issue is that might be facing you, You will always really find out how blessed you really are - For good health, for family, and friends.

Hi Meagan! Just wanted to let you know that I'm following along with you...we're keeping you and your family in our prayers always, and hoping for the best possible outcome. PLEASE call me if you need anything at all...I'll be happy to help however I can. Take care and make sure you get plenty of rest, too. Taking care of a child is very draining as it is, even without medical issues, but not getting enough rest will make it even harder. We're thinking about you...
