Today was a high mark, which was great after yesterday's low. We found out after the right eye surgery that the pressure in the left eye has creeped up some and that the eye would need surgery... again.
We had also been doing the patching to try and strengthen the left eye because it was believed that Savannah would not have much vision after the right eye surgery, but both Mike and I are amazed at how well Savannah is doing and seeing. We were able to find some really great toys and CDs to borrow and I think it has really made a HUGH difference. The new toys are interesting enough that they make her want to open her eyes more and see what is making all the sounds. If it had just been her old toys I don't think she would be doing nearly as well.
At our doctor appointment today Savannah did really well and the doc said that it looked perfect... as well as perfect can be for the day after surgery.
I asked while I was there though how many kids he sees on a yearly basis with the glaucoma like Savannah has. Well, it is around 20 kids. However, the kids have to travel from as far south as Orlando and Tampa, as far north as middle of Georgia and as far west as the FL panhandle, just to come see him for their appointments. Apparently there are very few pediatric eye doctors that will deal with uncontrolled glaucoma because of the seriousness and the complicated nature of the disease. That just goes to show how few kids have the condition (20 in at least a couple hundred square miles).... and how blessed we are to be living in the area right around the best doctor within the region.
