Streamlining the Family

So a few months ago, I subscribed to FlyLady. I thought I would give it a try and then decided that I didn't like having to weed through all the "extra" email that it produced. I understood why all the extra email was necessary - it was through their self advertised products that the domestic reminder service was able to be available for free. It still didn't make it any easier to weed out all the email I didn't want to read. Not to mention the extra amount of time it required to actually find the emails that really had some importance to them.

So I unsubscribe. I liked the idea - a general system to keep one on top of the domestic duties of a house - and the basic concept of the system - the home management notebook, but not the busyness of that particular system.

Then I was over at simple mom's website. The subject came up again, about creating a home management notebook. How life would be simpler because of it... Well you go read this series of messages entitled "Home Management Notebooks are a great idea". She can explain a home management notebook and a few other things a lot better than I ever could.

So all that said to say, I started a home management notebook this week. Taking simple mom's basic outline, I have begin accumulating, all in one place, as much of the important information that floats around this house as possible. Then if I need to check when an appointment is or whatnot, at least know where to look when I need it, rather then having to remember later when there is more time to find the little appointment card. One never knows, maybe this will revolutionize our house and lead to removing some of this clutter permanently, you know, by getting rid of the old systems -if there even was a system that is- that just didn't work.... like the piles of random papers that inevitably become fodder for a budding young artist in the house... and replace them with ones that actually make life easier for everyone. If not, then, all that is lost is the time I put into trying.

Hi Meagan,
Our system of keeping track of notes, etc. is to keep a spiral notebook someplace easy to find in the kitchen where we just log every important phone message ( not just Mike calling to say he's on his way home!). I also started using it for other 'notes' that would otherwise get lost - like when I call around to get quotes on the price of something. Dates of events I log on a calendar. See you soon.
