Savannah's Eye Appointment

So Savannah had an eye appointment with the Ophthalmologist this morning at Nemours. As far as the eye patching goes, nothing has changed. As far as the general eye health, Savannah now has a cataract in her left eye, as well as the glaucoma and lazy eye. Because of the cataract, her doctor was unable to see enough to know if the patching was helping or not.

As for the cataract, she will be rechecked in three months to see if it is growing, and if it is then she will be a candidate for surgery. Sometimes they are able to replace the lens that has clouded (the cataract) with an artificial lens, but in pediatric patients there are some cases where it just means removal of the lens and wearing a contact in the eye full time. Until the surgery date though the doctor does not know which surgery she is a candidate for.
I was actually amazed that Savannah's doctor was willing to tell me so much about the cataract. Usually he gives us a let's wait and see approach. I think Cataracts are a lot more straight forward that the other eye conditions that we have been dealing with.
I also have a lot of peace about it. I can't say I was shocked by the diagnosis. I have also, unfortunately, learned that Savannah is not going to have the easy way out on any eye issue.... None of it is going to be the fast or easy way out, and that is just the way it is. This is the battle we are going to face with Savannah till she is grown and fighting the battle on her own. It is just the way it is.
