IEP

This week we have Savannah's IEP meeting at the local school. The term IEP stands for Individualized Education plan, and in essence any child that has a special concern educationally has an IEP to identify the concerns of the teachers and/or the parents. Usually, as is the case with Savannah, it is a measurable condition -such as vision loss, hearing loss- or an obvious condition such as autism, etc that impair the child's ability to function in the classroom or to access the curriculum. The IEP goes through and sets goals to accomplish during a set period of time -say a month, or a school year - in different curriculum areas- vision, mobility, reading, writing, comprehension, etc- so that there is obvious improvement at the end of the year.

All of this came about due to the No Child Left Behind act and so forth that are federal laws stating that all children must have access to fair and appropriate education.
