We made it home last night. We officially arrived on Florida soil at 11:55 pm or some crazy midnight hour such as that. It was near 1 by the time we were sitting in our own house, and trying to get stuff unpacked enough so that we could get into bed.
I went and checked the gardens today. There isn't much to report. The beans all died while we were gone, I am not sure from dehydration or some animal eating it. Then the Sunflowers were long past bloom, like I thought they would be, and it is sad that there was no one around to enjoy them. The carrots and cucumbers were doing just fine, but I don't even know what to do with them if they do survive. The rest of the plants all died back, some more severely than others. Our Firebush by the front door might make a comeback but I doubt it. (I learned from years past that it is a whole lot harder to try and make a plant come back than it is to keep it maintained.) I also probably lost my apple tree. I haven't actually walked over to it, and there are green leaves shooting from the bottom, but the entire top is brown shrivelled leaves. I broke down with that discovery cause it was the one plant that I had spent many a prayers over, hoping that it would survive.
I think I am an emotional wreck today, in part cause the repercussions of being gone had on the garden, but just the let down of the trip being over. We were gone so long that the things that were important here, are no more. The garden that I was anticipating coming back to, isn't. The daily schedule that we had, is all messed up. There wasn't any food in the house....yada yada yada. I sound like I am starting to complain. Sorry. Like I said, just down today. Besides, the weather was a whole lot better up there. I am dying in this Florida heat!
